Both artists have lived quite a peripatetic life in the last few years. Until recently they were both based in Leeds, but they now live in Edinburgh having moved to Leith. Jo was born and bred in Yorkshire, but in between has lived in numerous places such as Exeter and Nottingham. Alf moved to Leeds via York from Cornwall where he was born. These web pages will introduce you to a range of their art works. Nearly all of their paintings are inspired by nature and the countryside which surrounds them at home or on their travels.
Some of Alf's works are still influenced by his native Cornwall, which he is convinced is one of the most beautiful parts of England in which to live and work, but
he has certainly found while living there that the very different landscapes, and townscapes, of Yorkshire provide him with a similar sort of inspiration. This inspiration is also allowing him to experiment with a variety of different styles and techniques to produce an interesting range of work. Now he is looking forward to exploring Edinburgh and Scotland.
Jo, on the other hand, feels very much the same about her native Yorkshire, her works are inspired by walks in the Dales and many other sources also. For Jo, painting is largely a relaxation - a way of doing something for herself. It makes a change from the day job, which is being an academic and working in what many might consider the esoteric field of European Union Law.
Both Jo and Alf have recently been drawing their inspiration from the West Coast of Ireland, having become enamoured of places like Donegal, Mayo and Connemara. Typically they will take the same view and, using their individual styles and techniques, produce quite different works.
